Sunderland Football Club announced on Monday that they have officially parted ways with head coach Tony Mowbray. The decision, which follows the recent 1-1 draw against Millwall, has left fans and pundits alike in a state of speculation about the club’s future trajectory, and of course, who will replace Mowbray as the next manager of Sunderland AFC.

Mowbray’s departure comes after a relatively short 15-month stint at the Stadium of Light. His arrival marked a period of uncertainty for the club, but he swiftly guided Sunderland to the Sky Bet Championship play-offs. Despite the eventual semi-final loss to Luton, Mowbray played a pivotal role in the team’s development.
However, recent times have seen a downturn in the club’s fortunes. The team’s performance has been inconsistent, with only one win in the last five games. This dip in form has resulted in Sunderland slipping to ninth place, three points adrift of the coveted top-six spots.
Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman acknowledged Mowbray’s contribution, stating,
“All at SAFC have thoroughly enjoyed working with Tony, and he is quite rightly held in high regard by our players and staff, and our supporters.”
Speakman further emphasized the difficulty of the decision but highlighted the club’s unwavering commitment to its overarching ambition and strategy.
In the interim, coach Mike Dodds will take over, pending the appointment of a new head coach. This transition is set to begin with the upcoming clash against West Brom, a match that will undoubtedly be under intense scrutiny. The club is now focused on identifying the right candidate to lead the team forward, with the promise of continued support for the coaching team and players during this interim period.
As Sunderland navigates through this transitional phase, the focus remains on redemption and resurgence. The club’s dedication to finding the ideal head coach underscores its commitment to returning to the play-off positions and, ultimately, achieving success in the Championship.
Online bookmakers have already opened up markets for the next Sunderland manager with ex Gillingham manager Neil Harris the early favourite and former Portsmouth boss Danny Cowley in close contention.
