Red Devils have yet another season to forget. The fans hoped that Erik Ten Hag would be the next Sir Alex Ferguson, however, their wishes have not yet been fulfilled. After the match against the Spurs at Old Trafford, their direct rival for a Champions League place, fans wonder if their team will play in the new format of UEFA’s top competition. This season’s performances in UCL have not convinced them, and we wanted to analyze the chances of them playing again in the competition next autumn. They are currently 7th in the league, with 32 points after 21 matches. Arsenal is currently in 4th place, the last one that takes a team to UCL, with 40 points and a game in hand.
In the last five matches in the league, Manchester United managed to win only once. The victory against the overachieving Villa managed by Unai Emery was important as they represented direct rivals in a qualification race. The draw against fierce rivals Liverpool, which is currently at the top of the Premier League table, can also be considered a good result for them. However, defeats against Nottingham Forest and West Ham, and a draw against Tottenham disappointed fans and made things harder for players.
Their next game will be played at Molineux Stadium against Wolves, which are undefeated in their last 8 home games. There will certainly be options to play this match at betting.co.uk, where you can try to predict the outcome. Only three days after that, they will have a chance to exact revenge on West Ham for the defeat suffered in round 18. The rest of the matches in February are against Aston Villa, Luton, and Fulham. With a string of good results, different from the display against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup, the Red Devils could be positioned far better than now in the league.
There are not many players that brought joy to fans this season. David de Gea’s highly-paid successor, Andre Onana, has not proven himself to be a great option for the goalkeeper. Bruno Fernandes is not as productive as in previous seasons, but the biggest disappointment must be Marcus Rashford. He is nowhere near his form from the previous season which secured him a new contract last summer. He finished last season with 17 goals and 5 assists from 35 matches, but he only managed to grab 4 goals and 2 assists this season. However, in the last three matches, he managed to score twice and assist his teammate once.
On the other hand, Alejandro Garnacho shows impressive potential. He got a lot more space with Sancho removed from the team and Antony not being able to find his Ajax form. The fans show patience with striker Rasmus Hojlund who joined the team last summer for a hefty 75 million EUR, even though he managed to score only twice in the league. The player from Denmark shows great movement and flair. If that can be combined with Garnacho’s form, the Red Devils can hopefully have a great attacking duo.
If we take a look at this season, we can’t say that it is successful for the club from Old Trafford. They have been knocked out of the UCL from a not-so-tough group with Bayern Munich, Copenhagen, and Galatasaray. Newcastle won the battle in the EFL Cup, so they are left with the FA Cup, where they will play against the winner of the repeated match between Newport and Eastleigh and the Premier League. They are eight points behind Arsenal which played one game less, and Manchester United will certainly need to pull together for a challenge to be in the first four places when the season is over.
