England faced Denmark on Thursday evening in their second group stage match of Euro 2024. After a rather uninspiring display from Southgate’s side against Serbia four days earlier, fans were hoping for a performance that produced more chances, more goals, and more spirit. Unfortunately, that was not to be.
England ground out a 1-1 draw with Denmark in a lacklustre manner. All time England top scorer Harry Kane put his side ahead in the 18th minute but similar to when Jude Bellingham scored against Serbia, there wasn’t much for fans to cheer about for the remainder of the game.
Gareth Southgate has long had his critics, and also supporters. After all, he has achieved one of the highest win rates of any England manager, and has lead his side to a European Championship final and World Cup quarter-final in his last two major tournament. However, England’s performances so far at Euro 2024 have resulted in some fans who previously supported him, sharing the opinion that it may be time for Southgate to step aside.
Next England Manager Odds | ||
---|---|---|
Graham Potter | 9/4 | |
Eddie Howe | 6/1 | |
Lee Carsley | 8/1 | |
Mauricio Pochettinho | 9/1 | |
Pep Guardiola | 14/1 | |
Frank Lampard | 14/1 |
One name that has been strongly rumoured to succeed Southgate is Graham Potter, and there has been a strong support for him in the betting market since England drew with Denmark. In fact, the backing has been so evident that the odds on Potter being the next England manager have shortened from 5/1 to just 9/4 on betting site bet365 since the final whistle of the game!
Of course, Southgate still has time to turn things around and England’s knockout game fixtures could determine whether or not he’s able to do that. However, whichever teams England face in the next stages of the tournament, they’re ultimately going to have to improve. Southgate stated that they’re still experimenting with positions of players and associated tactics, but time is quickly running out for him to get it right. Of course, there is also the chance that faith in the team, and manager, are restored following England vs Slovenia on Tuesday evening should England change their style of play and come away as comfortable and convincing winners. It really doesn’t take much to sway England fans and the media one way or the other.
England headed into Euro 2024 as the bookies favourites, priced at around 3/1 pre-tournament. Following their 1-1 draw with Denmark and back-to-back lacklustre displays, the odds on Southgate’s side to win it have drifted to 9/2 with our Euro 2024 tip France and hosts Germany now the leading duo.
England still remain ahead of Spain, Portugal and the Netherlands in the betting markets despite some impressive performances from all sides.
