An unexpected turn of events has resulted in the majority of football matches worldwide being put on hold or cancelled. The lack of English top-level football has left a gap in many football fans’ lives, especially with many being confined to their homes without any sport on television.
However, League Two club Leyton Orient have come up with a slightly out-of-the-box event which has caught the attention of fans and clubs worldwide which should bring some of the excitement of football back to the nation.
Leyton Orient came up with the idea to host a FIFA 20 tournament with top-level players and fans representing their clubs. Clubs worldwide can apply to enter and nominate one of their current players or fans to represent them in the tournament. In total, 128 teams will feature in the tournament.
Clubs from the Premier League, Championship, League One & Two as well as Serie A, the Eredevisie and La Liga have all entered with big names such as Andros Townsend, Neal Maupay and Todd Cantwell all confirming that they will be representing their clubs.
As well as bringing a bit of joy and fun to football fans worldwide, the tournament will raise funds for lower-league clubs who face going under due to the season being put on hold.
The tournament works similar to the FA Cup in that it is a knockout tournament with a draw for the next round taking place after each round of games.
With the tournament featuring 128 teams, there will be three knockout rounds leading up to the quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final.
The Fifa20 Ultimate Quaran Team Cup will take place over two and a half weeks from the end of March into the beginning of April.
First Round: Sunday 22nd March – 7pm
Second Round: Thursday 26 March – 7 pm
Third Round: Saturday 28 March – 7 pm
Quarter-finals: Monday 30 March – 7 pm
Semi-Final: Wednesday 1 April – 7 pm
Final: Friday 3 April – 7 pm
