The BBC Sports Personality of the Year, or SPOTY, as it is sometimes referred to as, is an award that is given out at the ceremony that takes place in December of each year.

The 2023 BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony will take place on Tuesday 19th December.
The ceremony will be broadcast live in BBC One with coverage starting at 7pm GMT.
The shortlist for the 2023 Sports Personality of the Year has been confirmed and there are six nominees.
Lionesses goalkeeper, Mary Earps, is a strong favourite to win the year with online bookmakers pricing her at odds of just 1/7 or shorter.
Other contenders for this year’s award include jockey Frankie Dettori, golfer Rory McIlroy, athlete Katrina Johnson-Thompson, tennis player Alfie Hewett and ex-cricketer Stuart Broad.

There have been 69 winners of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year since it was created in 1954 with many sporting greats gaining recognition via the public vote for their contributions to their trade.
Only five people have won the award more than once – Andy Murray three times and boxer Henry Cooper and F1 drivers Damon Hill, Nigel Mansell and Lewis Hamilton winning it twice.
