The Football Pools is the UK’s original football pool betting company and has been offering its services for over 90 years and has paid out over £3.2 billion to lucky winners.
Before moving their services online, The Football Pools used to be operated door-to-door with pool slips being posted through letterboxes and collected by designated staff. There were a number of pool companies with the largest being the Vernons Pools, Zetters Pools and the Littlewoods Pools who were the first company to provide football pools having started selling them outside of Manchester United’s stadium, Old Trafford in 1923.
After submitting their entries, players would wait for the results to come in to see if they have won what could be life-changing sums of money. 1986 was the year that The Football Pools created their first millionaires after a syndicate of ten colleagues from Devizes, Wiltshire won £1,017,890. The biggest ever Football Pools payout was a huge £4 million in March 2010 but perhaps the most impressive win was from one lucky customer who turned a 71p bet into a cool £1 million!
Now that The Football Pools is online, they are able to offer a number of different pool games as well as the original classic football pools.
Classic Pools
The Classic Pools is the original football pools game which has been running for almost a century. It’s an easy to play game which can result in huge cash prizes.
To play the classic pools, players simply need to select 10 fixtures from the 49 which are listed on The Football Pools website. The aim is to select matches which you believe will end in a draw with score draws producing the most points which determine the winner.
- Score draw (1-1 or higher)= 3 points
- No-score draw (0-0)= 2 points
- Home or away win= 1 point
Once all fixtures have been played, the points from your 8 best performing selections are totalled together and the winners will be those with the most points. Scores of 22, 23 and 24 generally receive cash prizes but you can win with a lower points total. The size of the prizes each round depends on the total number of score draws across all 49 matches as well as how many other players score 22, 23 or 24 points.
There is a £3 million top prize for the Classic Pools which is achieved by correctly selecting 9 score draws when exactly 9 matches out of the 49 end in a score draw.
If you score 20 or more points, you will also be entered into the prize draw where there are thousands of cash prizes to be won ranging from £25 all the way up to £100,000.
The Classic Pools costs £1 per game to play and you can enter as many times as you like.
Spot The Ball
If you remember The Football Pools being delivered through your door then you’ll remember the Spot The Ball game which was part of it. Players were provided with a photograph of a football match in-play with the football removed from the image. You then had to mark an X on the image with a pen where you through the ball was. If you guessed correctly, you won a cash prize.
Sport The Ball was an extremely popular game when The Football Pools was in paper form and so it’s great to see the game still running now that the service has been moved online.
To play Spot The Ball, simply move the cursor over the image and click where you think the football is. There are various prizes depending on how close to the ball you get.
- 1st Prize: The player who marks the centre of the ball – £500
- 2nd Prize: The spot nearest the centre – £50
- 3rd Prize: The spot 2nd nearest to the centre – £25
- The next 15 nearest spots get £1
Spot The Ball can be played on both desktop and mobile on a daily basis with each prediction costing just 20p and a minimum of 5 entries required (£1).
Lucky Clover
Lucky Clover is a bingo game from The Football Pools which uses the numbers which are drawn in the main Irish Lotto draws which take place every Wednesday and Saturday.
To play Lucky Clover, you simply need to select between 2 and 5 numbers from the 47 in the draw and if your numbers are drawn, you’ll win a cash prize. You can also add additional bonus ball numbers and if you match them all, you can win up to £1 million!

Match Bet
As well as being able to bet on football pools and lotteries, customers at The Football Pools can bet on football matches as you would at a standard bookmaker. Currently, only the match result market is available with football matches from the UK, Europe, Asia and other parts of the world covered.
Although you may wish to use a dedicated bookmaker for the majority of your football bets due to the increased number of markets available, this is a nice addition to the service and we were impressed by the odds on offer which were in many cases, better than some of the leading UK bookies.
Soccer 6
Soccer 6 is a simple game from the Football Pools which allows customers to win up to £5,000.
To play Soccer 6, you simply need to predict the outcome of 6 selected football matches by selecting Home/Draw/Away. If you predict all 6 correctly, you will win the pool, or a share of the pool if there are multiple winners.
If you wish, you can select more than one outcome for each fixture. This will add additional lines but increase your chances of winning.
Each line on Soccer 6 costs £2.
Goal Rush 8
Goal Rush 8 is a Both Teams To Score ‘BTTS’ prediction game. Players need to select 8 football matches from the list of 35 in which they think both teams will find the net.
If your selections are the first 8 matches displayed on the coupon where both teams score, you will win a share of the £1 million prize pool. You’ll also win a cash prize if both teams score in all of your 8 selections and a smaller consolation prize if 7 of 8 selections produce goals from both teams.
Each entry into Goal Rush 8 costs £2.
Premier 10
Premier 10 is similar to the Soccer 6 game in that you need to predict the outcome of the selected football matches. The difference with Premier 10 is that there are 10 games to predict the outcome for instead of just 6.
Predict all 10 correctly and you’ll win a share of the pool which is up to £40,000. You’ll also win a cash prize if you miss by one and correctly predict the outcome of 9 of the 10 matches.
Again, you’re able to increase your chance of winning by selecting more than one outcome for each of the fixtures which will add additional lines.
Each line on Premier 10 costs £1 making it half the price of Soccer 6.
Jackpot 12
If you want to take an even riskier bet, Jackpot 12 requires you to predict the outcome of 12 football matches. You need to get all 12 predictions correct in this game to win a cash prize of almost £70k, but you are able to select multiple outcomes for each game.
At just 50p per line, Jackpot 12 is a chance to win large sums of money for a relatively low stake.
