Tote is a bookmaker dedicated to horse racing betting and specifically, tote bets. You won’t find any betting markets for sports such as football, tennis or golf at tote but if you’re a horse racing punter and enjoy a tote bet when at the races, Tote gives you the opportunity to place those bets from the comfort of your own home.
The Tote works differently to what you may be used to with a standard bookmaker. With bookies such as William Hill, Bet365 and Betfred, you are given fixed odds for your bets. This means that you’re able to calculate your exact returns and profit should your bets win. However, when betting with the Tote, you don’t know how much you will win from your bets until the race is over. This is because the stakes of everyone who puts a bet on a particular race are collected in a pool and then shared out to those who backed the winner.
As mentioned, you can’t place fixed-odds bets with Tote. Instead, there are generally four different types of bets available for each horse race. ‘Totewin’ and Toteplace’ bets are the most common and with these, you are betting on a runner to either win or place.
Other common bet types for horse races are ‘Exacta’ and ‘Trifecta’. With Exacta bets, you select two horses which you think will finish in the first two places and with a Trifecta, you select three horses which you think will finish in the first three places.
There are also a number of other Tote bet types which we will explain below as well as season-long competitions such as Tote Ten To Follow.
Tote Swinger bets are when you back two horses to finish in the top three of a race. Your selections can finish in any order and so long as they both finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd, you will win a share of the prize pool.
Your two horses must finish either 1st and 2nd, 1st and 3rd or 2nd and 3rd.
Similar to Exacta bets, with Tote Quinella bets, you select two horses which you think will finish 1st and 2nd. Your horses can finish in any order for your bet to come in.
The Tote Placepot is extremely popular and is many punters first bet of the day. With the Tote Placepot, you must select one horse to place in the first six races at any UK, Irish or selected International meeting. Several other bookies offer placepot but the Tote is one of the most popular.
Tote Placepot is available from 9am every day and with an average payout of over £400, it’s a great way to be in with the chance of large returns from a relatively small stake.
The Tote Quadpot is similar to the Placepot except that with the Quadpot, you only have to select horses which you think will place in four races instead of six. The four qualifying races are the third through to the sixth races of the day so the Quadpot can be an attractive option if you are finding it difficult to pick a runner from the first two races of the day for the Placepot.
Scoop6 is another extremely popular bet which is available at Tote.co.uk. Every Saturday, there are six nominated races and the aim is to pick the winner in each of them. Each entry costs £2 and if you pick all six winners, you can win a whopping £15 million! You can also win a share of the prize pool if all six of your horses place.
Many people play Scoop6 on a weekly basis with the main attraction of Scoop6 is the potential to win life-changing amounts of money for just a £2 bet.
Tote Jackpot is available daily and costs from just 50p to enter. Each day, a UK meeting will be nominated and to win a share of the jackpot pool, you must select the winners of first six races at that meeting. The minimum prize pool each day for Tote Jackpot is £10,000 making it a popular choice with many punters.
Tote Survivor is an exciting ‘Last Man Standing’ type bet which is played over six rounds. Every Saturday, six races are nominated and players must select the winner from the first race. After the first race has been run, any players who didn’t correctly pick the winner will be eliminated and those who did will select the winner from the second nominated race. The game will continue until there is only one player remaining. Any remaining players after all six races have been run will share the prize pool.
One advantage of betting with Tote is that if you win a bet and there are few other winners, the returns from your winning bet can be significantly greater than the returns had you placed the same bet with a bookmaker offering fixed odds on your selection. However, this is not always the case. If you back a winner which many others have also backed, it is possible that your returns could be less than if you had placed the bet with a bookie.
This is where the Tote Guarantee comes in.
With the Tote Guarantee, Tote will boost your winnings so that they match at least the SP at the bookies. However, if your returns are greater than if you had took the SP, you’ll still get to keep the winnings.
It’s a bit like Best Odds Guaranteed but for Tote bets.
Tote Guarantee Key terms: We’ll always pay at least SP on Win bets and if the Tote dividend is greater, we’ll pay out at that price. Tote.co.uk, Tote.ie, Tote App and selected UK and Irish racecourse customers only. Promotion applies to Tote win bets and the win part of each way bets on all UK & Irish races. Limits apply. Full terms and conditions available at https://tote.co.uk/promotions/
The Tote Guarantee is available on all UK races throughout every week.
The offer is available on Win pools but not Place pools and it does apply to each way bets but only the win part of the bet.
Be aware that the Tote Guarantee will only apply to £500 of any eligible bet. For example, if you placed a £600 bet, only £500 would be eligible for the Tote Guarantee.
Live streaming of all available UK & Irish horse races are available at Tote.co.uk and is an extremely popular choice for a lot of punters due to one reason. Unlike with most other bookies who require you to place a bet on a race in order to be able to stream it, at Tote, you can stream all races just by logging into your account! No bet is necessary with the only requirement being that you have made at least one deposit into your account.
Despite Tote’s devotion to horse racing, they have now expanded their offerings with the introduction of the Tote Sportsbook, providing customers with the option to bet on a much wider array of sports, including popular sports like football, tennis, and golf, as well as less popular sports like speedway, hockey, and waterpolo. Alongside sports, they also offer betting markets on politics as well as TV & Music, where you can currently bet on Eurovision and the BBC sports personality.
Tote’s Sportsbook offers both pre-match and in-play betting options, so punters can get involved before kick-off, or during the games as they unfold. They also provide real-time updates of games with the addition of a live tracker. Although real-time trackers aren’t as good as watching games live, they do give punters a perspective for how games are progressing, allowing us to make more informed betting decisions.
You can find all the standard bet types, along with Tote’s specific boosts and specials where you’ll often get the best odds in the market. They offer features like Cash Out and Bet Builders, offering bettors more control over their bets, allowing them to secure profits or create their own favourable bets according to their strategies.
After delving into different sports categories on their platform, their odds seem to remain competitive across all markets in comparison to several other big bookies. Odds are a big part of what separates the good bookmakers from the bad bookmakers, so it’s refreshing to see Tote offering such competitive rates.
If I were to point out a couple of downfalls, one would be the lack of esports games like Dota 2 or League of Legends, which are popular for virtual competitions. Another downside is the navigation within sports categories. For example, the football category displays a mix of today’s games and future games, without a dedicated section for all of today’s games, which can be frustrating as you have to switch between different leagues to find specific matches.
Overall, the introduction of a well rounded sportsbook that offers competitive rates and live markets on a variety of different sports, is a great addition to Tote’s existing pools markets and will appeal to a much wider audience.
Tote provides a number of different ways to get in touch with the team should you have a question or a problem. Live chat is the most popular option due to being able to get connected to a support agent within seconds. Email support is also available as well as telephone support for UK & non-UK customers.
If you’d prefer to get in touch via mail, you can do so using the address below.
Tote Email: [email protected]
Tote Phone: UK 0800 032 8188 / Non-UK +44 1942 314045
Tote Address: Customer Care, Douglas House, Tote Park, Chapel Lane, Wigan, WN3 4HS
The Tote Placepot app allows you to place Placepot and other multi leg bets using your smartphone or tablet. You can also stream all live races directly through the app, navigate racecards and access other areas of your account such as deposits and withdrawal.
The Tote app is available to download for free from the app stores for both iOS and Android devices.
Currently, Tote only accepts Visa and Mastercard. Although the vast majority of users will be using these methods, we would like to see some additional options available in the future such as PayPal, Neteller or Skrill which are commonly available with many UK bookmakers.
Deposits into your Tote account are free and instant as you would expect and withdrawals take an average of 3-5 days to reach your bank account.
Tote isn’t your standard bookmaker but if you enjoy betting on horse racing and placing pool bets, there isn’t a better place to do it.
We were impressed by the design and usability of the Tote site as well having access to free live horse racing streams without having to place a bet on the race.
