Tote is a bookmaker dedicated to horse racing betting and specifically, tote bets. You won’t find any betting markets for sports such as football, tennis or golf at tote but if you’re a horse racing punter and enjoy a tote bet when at the races, Tote gives you the opportunity to place those bets from the comfort of your own home.
What Is The Tote?
The Tote works differently to what you may be used to with a standard bookmaker. With bookies such as William Hill, Bet365 and Betfred, you are given fixed odds for your bets. This means that you’re able to calculate your exact returns and profit should your bets win. However, when betting with the Tote, you don’t know how much you will win from your bets until the race is over. This is because the stakes of everyone who puts a bet on a particular race are collected in a pool and then shared out to those who backed the winner.
Tote Betting
As mentioned, you can’t place fixed-odds bets with Tote. Instead, there are generally four different types of bets available for each horse race. ‘Totewin’ and Toteplace’ bets are the most common and with these, you are betting on a runner to either win or place.
Other common bet types for horse races are ‘Exacta’ and ‘Trifecta’. With Exacta bets, you select two horses which you think will finish in the first two places and with a Trifecta, you select three horses which you think will finish in the first three places.
There are also a number of other Tote bet types which we will explain below as well as season-long competitions such as Tote Ten To Follow.
Tote Swinger
Tote Swinger bets are when you back two horses to finish in the top three of a race. Your selections can finish in any order and so long as they both finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd, you will win a share of the prize pool.
Your two horses must finish either 1st and 2nd, 1st and 3rd or 2nd and 3rd.
Tote Quinella
Similar to Exacta bets, with Tote Quinella bets, you select two horses which you think will finish 1st and 2nd. Your horses can finish in any order for your bet to come in.
Tote Placepot
The Tote Placepot is extremely popular and is many punters first bet of the day. With the Tote Placepot, you must select one horse to place in the first six races at any UK, Irish or selected International meeting. Several other bookies offer placepot but the Tote is one of the most popular.
Tote Placepot is available from 9am every day and with an average payout of over £400, it’s a great way to be in with the chance of large returns from a relatively small stake.
Tote Quadpot
The Tote Quadpot is similar to the Placepot except that with the Quadpot, you only have to select horses which you think will place in four races instead of six. Tote Jackpot
Tote Jackpot is available daily and costs from just 50p to enter. Each day, a UK meeting will be nominated and to win a share of the jackpot pool, you must select the winners of first six races at that meeting. The minimum prize pool each day for Tote Jackpot is £10,000 making it a popular choice with many punters.
Tote Survivor
Tote Survivor is an exciting ‘Last Man Standing’ type bet which is played over six rounds. Every Saturday, six races are nominated and players must select the winner from the first race. After the first race has been run, any players who didn’t correctly pick the winner will be eliminated and those who did will select the winner from the second nominated race. The game will continue until there is only one player remaining. Any remaining players after all six races have been run will share the prize pool.
Tote Guarantee
One advantage of betting with Tote is that if you win a bet and there are few other winners, the returns from your winning bet can be significantly greater than the returns had you placed the same bet with a bookmaker offering fixed odds on your selection. However, this is not always the case. If you back a winner which many others have also backed, it is possible that your returns could be less than if you had placed the bet with a bookie.
This is where the Tote Guarantee comes in.
With the Tote Guarantee, Tote will boost your winnings so that they match at least the SP at the bookies. However, if your returns are greater than if you had took the SP, you’ll still get to keep the winnings.

What Bets Is The Tote Guarantee Available On?
The Tote Guarantee is available on all UK races throughout every week.
The offer is available on Win pools but not Place pools and it does apply to each way bets but only the win part of the bet.
Be aware that the Tote Guarantee will only apply to £500 of any eligible bet. For example, if you placed a £600 bet, only £500 would be eligible for the Tote Guarantee.

Tote App
