Casino FAQ
Although we cover a lot of frequently asked questions in our casino guides, below, we have listed some of the most asked questions along with answers.
Can I Make A Profit Playing Casino Games?
Yes. There’s nothing stopping you playing blackjack, roulette, online slots or any other casino game and walking away with a profit. Although there are ideal strategies to use when playing casino games, it mostly comes down to luck whether you win or lose in a session. However, always remember that the casino has the edge on games which means that the odds are slightly against you when playing.
What Is the House Edge?
The house edge is the advantage which the casino has over the player for a particular game and is usually displayed in a percentage format.
For example, if the house edge of a casino game was 2%, this means that on average, you could expect to lose £2 for every £100 you wager on that game. Of course, in reality, you won’t lose exactly £2 every time you wager £100 as sometimes you will be in profit and sometimes you will lose more. However, mathematically, you will lose £2 on average in the long term.
What Is RTP?
RTP stands for ‘Return To Player’ and is related to the house edge. If a casino game has an RTP of 97%, this means that it will pay out £97 for every £100 wagered on it on average. Again, sometimes it will pay out more and sometimes less.
You can calculate the house edge of a casino game by subtracting the RTP from 100%. If a game has an RTP of 97%, the house edge would be 3%.
What Are The Best Casino Games To Play?
This depends on why you are playing in the first place. If you are solely looking for the best chance to make a profit, then the best games to play would be the ones which have the lowest house edge (the highest RTP games). However, playing casino games should also be enjoyable and so you may wish to find a balance between games which you enjoy playing which also have a relatively high house edge.
What Is Variance In Casino Games?
Variance is a very important factor to take into consideration when choosing a casino game to play. Some casino games are highly volatile whereas others have relatively low variance.
When a casino game has high variance, it will pay out less often but when it does, the wins are generally quite large. When a game is low-variance, it will produce more wins for the play but of smaller amounts.
Therefore, you have a better chance of hitting a big win with a high-variance game but stand a greater chance of busting out.
Online slots have varying levels of variance with some paying out huge amounts but very rarely whereas others tend to be played by more casual players who enjoy the small and frequent wins.
Variance occurs in other casino games also such as Roulette. If you place a bet on red/black, the variance is relatively low as you will win roughly 1 in 2 spins. However, if you bet on a single number, the variance is greater as you will only win 1 in every 37 spins on average but when you do, the returns are bigger.
Are There Any Winning Casino Betting Systems?
Despite what many people who are selling systems will tell you, there are no systems which increase your chances of winning with the excepting of card counting. The house edge is fixed and although some systems allow you to reduce the variance which makes it seem like the system works as you win frequently, they do not alter the overall house edge or RTP of the game.
