Chelmsford City Racecourse is located in Great Leighs, Essex and is the newest racecourse in the UK. Taunton Racecourse previously held that record having been built in 1927 but in April 2008, Chelmsford opened to become the first new racecourse in the UK for over 80 years.

Although it’s only been open for a little over a decade, it went into administration less than 12 months into operation when it was known as Great Leighs Racecourse. In 2009, the racecourse closed and didn’t open its doors again until January 2015 when it re-emerged under its current name after being purchased by Betfred.

Chelmsford City Racecourse

Chelmsford City features an all-weather track which is surfaced with Polytrack.

It is a left-handed oval-shaped course that is a little over a mile around and features two straights of around two furlongs in distance. However, it accommodates races of seven furlongs, one and two miles using the two chutes.

Chelmsford Feature Races

Chelmsford City hasn’t attracted the biggest fixtures since reopening in 2015 but there are a few notable races on the calendar.

The Cardinal Stakes takes place in April and was introduced in 2019. It’s open to three-year old horses and run over one mile.

The Chelmer Fillies’ Stakes was also introduced in 2019 and takes place at Chelmsford City in late April/early May. The race is open to fillies aged three years and is run over a distance of 6 furlongs.

Lastly, the Listed Queen Charlotte Fillies’ Stakes is the highest-graded race belonging to Chelmsford City. It has taken place in June since first run in 2018 and open to fillies and mares aged four years or older who run over a distance of 7 furlongs.
