Saturday racing at Epsom brings us some of the best races at the course. The Epsom Derby is held on the first Saturday in June and is the biggest event of the year.

Epsom Racecourse

Epsom Racecourse can be quite testing due to the sharp descents and stiff uphill climbs.

It is left-handed and somewhat unusual in that it is a ‘U’ shape rather than an oval or circle that is more commonly seen.

As well as the ‘U’ shaped course, there is a five-furlong straight course that is predominantly downhill and the fastest of its kind in the world.

Epsom Feature Races

The highlight of the racing calendar at Epsom is the Epsom Derby which is run on the first Saturday in June. It is the most prestigious of the five Classics that include the 2,000 Guineas Stakes and the 1,000 Guineas Stakes at Newmarket, the St Leger Stakes at Doncaster and The Oaks which is also at Epsom. It is also Britain’s richest flat horse race.

Lester Piggott is the leading jockey in the Derby having achieved nine victories between 1954 and 1983.

The Oaks is another major race that is held at Epsom in late May/early June. It is the second-oldest of the five Classics only to the St Leger and attracts huge crowds on the day.

Betting Tips For Epsom Races

• Left-handed horseshoe(ish) shape, undulating with a cambered home turn and downhill run to the straight (also cambered)
• Runners can come to the standside in wet conditions and/or soft ground
• Two 1m4f Classics – the Derby and the Oaks run at the track on consecutive days in early June (occasionally late May for the Oaks)
• Low draw generally preferable in sprints
