Hexham Tips

Hexham Racecourse is situated 800 feet above sea level at High Yarridge and is the only racecourse in Northumberland.

The course hosts fifteen National Hunt races annually from March through to December

The current Hexham racecourse was opened in 1793 but was closed in 1880 before being resurrected by local enthusiast, Charles William Chipchase Henderson who invested significantly in the course to ensure it was able to reopen.

The course at Hexham is left-handed and around 1 1/2 miles around.

It’s an undulating track that has a relatively short uphill climb heading onto the finishing straight and features ten fences to be jumped.

Hexham Feature Races

Hexham Racecourse hosts National Hunt meets from March through to December but the course does close its doors in July and August before resuming activities in September for the four months for the courses’ season.

The Cheltenham Festival Raceday gets the season underway at Hexham in mid-March and features six races as well as the thrills from the Cheltenham Festival as it happens on TV.

April is a quiet month at the course but May features three meets, one of which is the Heart of All England Raceday with the Premier Hunter Chase of the North being the headline race.

June also hosts three meets including Ladies Day which is extremely popular with racegoers and those simply looking to dress to impress in an attempt to win one of the many awards that are dished out based on the attire of guests.

After a two month break, Hexham reopens in September with six more meets scheduled until the end of the year. Some of which include the  Autumn Raceday in October, Winter Raceday in November and Christmas Raceday in December.
