Lingfield Park Tips

Lingfield is one of five all-weather tracks in the UK with the others being Kempton Park, Southwell, Wolverhampton, Chelmsford and Newcastle Racecourse. It is also the only racecourse in the UK that hosts three races types – National Hunt, flat turf and flat all-weather.

The all-weather surface is Polytrack which is a mixture of silica sand, recycled synthetic fibres and recycled rubber which is also used at Lingfield Park, Kempton Park and Chelmsford.

Lingfield Railway Station adjoins the course making it easily accessible to the public. There is also an on-site hotel and golf course which adds to the attraction of this prestigious racecourse.

Lingfield All-Weather Track

The all-weather track at Lingfield is situated inside the turf track and is relatively sharp being only one and a quarter miles around. It’s a left-handed track and the most used of the three at Lingfield.

Lingfield Turf Course

The turf course is longer than the all-weather track and features steep downhill runs throughout the home bend and straight. The straight flat course hosts races up to 7 furlongs in distance.

Lingfield Jumps Course

The jumps course is not used heavily due to most of the National Hunt races now being run on the all-weather track. The fences on the jumps course are quite forgiving with a low rate of fallers.

Lingfield Feature Races

Without over 100 meetings each year, there certainly isn’t a shortage of races to look forward to at Lingfield.

One of the most notable is the all-weather Derby, also known as the Winter Derby, which is the UK’s first group race of the year, taking place in February or March. It’s a Group 3 flat race that is open to horses aged four years or older and run over a distance of 1 mile and 2 furlongs. Since being established in 1998, the Derby has never been won by the same horse more than once.

The course is also host to the Lingfield Oaks and Derby Trial which are held in May and act as trials for the Epsom Oaks and Epsom Derby.

Flat Course (Turf)

• Left-handed, rise prior to a downhill turn into the straight
• Group 3 Chartwell Fillies Stakes over 7f and Derby and Oaks Trials in May the feature races
• John Gosden (4/11 with 6 total places) respected with a 36% strike-rate (tiny level stakes loss though)
• Roger Varian (8/23 and 15 places) for a near 35% strike-rate a trainer to note
• Rae Guest (8/25) for a 32% strike-rate a smaller trainer who does well
• Archie Watson (10/49 and 23 total places) for a 20% strike-rate does well at the track
• Ellie Mackenzie (5/11) has a 45% strike-rate here (not ridden since April 2022 – retired?)
• Rhys Clutterbuck (6/24 and 12 places) with a 25% strike-rate is a jockey to consider
• David Egan (8/42) for a 19% strike-rate shows a profit
• Sean Kirrane (3/7 and 4 total places) for a near 43% strike-rate another of note

Flat Course (AW)

• Left-handed, inside the turf course, sharp at times, low draw best in sprints, jockeys can often nick a crucial few lengths turning for home
• G3 Winter Derby in March a traditional winter/spring AW highlight, also plenty of Listed races and AW Champions Day in the past with the AW Vase a feature on Good Friday 7th April 2023
• Andrea Atzeni (26/87 and 48 total places) for a near 30% strike-rate is of note
• Frankie Dettori (15/31 and 21 places) for a 48% strike-rate is a jockey to consider
• Marco Ghiani (23/112 and 50 places) does well with a 20.54% strike-rate
• Roger Varian (32/128 and 68 places) with a 25% strike-rate is respected
• Sean Curran (6/19) with a 31.58% strike-rate a trainer to note
• Jeremy Scott (5/15 and 7 total places) boasts a 33% strike-rate at the track

National Hunt Course

• Left-handed, ground often testing
• Formerly home to a couple of Graded novice races in December (hurdle and chase) but they’ve moved
• Valuable handicaps featured at the track in January 2022 and hopefully will continue to do so
• Seamus Mullins (8/48 and 17 total places) boasts a 16.67% strike-rate and a very healthy level stakes profit
• Gary Moore (31/150 and 57 total places) with a 20.67% strike-rate does well here
• Olly Murphy (8/37 and 18 total places) for a 21.62% strike-rate a trainer of note
• Sam Drinkwater (6/15 and 9 total places) respected with a 40% strike-rate
• Nico De Boinville (7/24 and 13 total places) does well with a 29% strike-rate
• Jamie Moore (19/94) does well with a 20% strike-rate
