Newmarket Racecourse consists of two individual courses, the Rowley Mile Course and the July Course.
The Rowley Mile is host to races taking place throughout the spring and Autumn and despite the name, is actually slightly longer than one mile.
Both the 1,000 Guineas and the 2,000 Guineas are run on this iconic course which is named after Charles II’s favourite stallion, Old Rowley.
The course is exceptionally wide and features ‘The Dip’ which consists of a furlong downhill before the final uphill furlong to the post.
Being a relatively straight course, the draw bias is less important.
The July Course is used throughout the summer months and features ‘The Bunbury Mile’ which is a one mile straight.
Similar to The Rowley Mile, it has an ‘L’ shape with just one bend at a slightly more demanding angle.
There is actually a third course at Newmarket which is the Round Course. This course is used only for The Newmarket Town Plate which takes place once a year in August.
