The Placepot is a popular bet with both novice and pro punters and can be placed online at the racecourse or in betting shops with those bookmakers who offer them. Placepots are an attractive betting option due to the fact large sums of money can be won from relatively small stakes and because you don’t actually have to pick winners. Instead, you simply need to select horses that you think will finish in a place position. You can place Placepots on regular horse races and also on big meetings. A Cheltenham Placepot is often a popular bet as well as at other major festivals throughout the year.
Our placepot tips are published every morning, 7 days a week. All of our placepot betting tips are completely free and compiled using our own in-house unique algorithm. Various factors are taking into account by the algorithm when determining the selections for each placepot meeting and with being developed by betting experts who have been in the industry for several decades, we’re confident that it produces value selections.
When the odds are available, we may also publish placepot tips for tomorrow’s races. Both today’s and tomorrow’s placepot tips can be found at the top of this page.

Placepot prize pools often range from between a minimum of £25,000 to £50,000 on a daily basis. However, they do increase the minimum pool amounts significantly for big meetings throughout the year.
It’s not uncommon for Tote to offer prize pools of £100,000+, and even up to £250,000 for some meetings during the National Hunt season, which are definitely worth keeping an eye out for and having a punt using our free placepot tips.
You can find the total prize pool for each available placepot on the Tote website daily.
The aim of placepot betting is to select horses in the nominated races to finish in a place position. The smallest returns come from when you back the favourites and so it’s advisable that you look further down the field to see if there is any value in backing one of the longer-priced runners.
Some placepot punters opt to back a selection of ‘bankers’ that they believe stand a very good chance of finishing in a place position and also include a few outsiders. This is the medium-risk approach and can still result in a good-sized payout should all of your selections place.
If you wish to, you have the option of selecting multiple horses from a single race. However, we recommend not backing too many runners in a race as this will increase your placepot perm along with your total stake.
Below, you will find today’s Placepot races at eligible meetings as well as the amount staked in the pool , this is updated throughout the day.
The Tote was formed in 1928 by the UK Government with the aim of providing a safe alternative to illegal off-course bookmakers and so that some of the revenues generated by gambling could be fed back into horse racing. The first highstreet Tote betting shop opened in 1972 and over time more than 500+ were opened across the UK and Ireland. Although The Tote was originally formed by the UK Government, it was sold to Betfred in 2011 who obtained a 7-year licence to exclusively provide pool betting services at UK racecourses. In October 2019, the business was sold to UK Tote Group. Tote.co.uk has now launched with a new website offering a range of different pool betting options. They also offer an excellent sign up offer for any new customers. Our review of the Tote website can be found here.
The Tote Placepot is one of a number of betting products offered by The Tote with others including Scoop6, Tote Jackpot and Quadpot. There is a Placepot for each race meeting every day with punters having to select a horse from the first six races of the day unless otherwise stated. You can select multiple horses in each race and this is then known as a Perm bet , this will tend increase your overall Placepot stake. All of the stakes bet on a Placepot are put into a pool and divided between winners after deductions have been made.
To win a share of the Placepot dividend, you must have at least 1 selection placed in each race. The number of places offered in each race will depend on the number of actual runners as shown below.
Number of Runners | Placepot Places |
---|---|
Up to 4 runners | 1st |
5, 6, or 7 runners | 1st, 2nd |
8+ runners in non-handicaps | 1st, 2nd, 3rd |
8-15 runners in handicaps | 1st, 2nd, 3rd |
16+ runners in handicaps | 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th |
If you select just one horse from each of the six races, you will only be betting on one line and so your total stake will be whatever you enter. However, if you add more than one horse in one or more of the races, your stake will be increased as you will be placing multiple lines. To calculate your Placepot stake on a perm bet , simply multiply the number of selections you have chosen in each race. For example:
1 x 3 x 1 x 2 x 2 x 1 = 12 lines. Therefore, your total stake will be 12 times your stake per line. If you were placing a £1 bet per line, your total stake would be £12.
The minimum stake per line for Placepot bets is 1p and the minimum overall stake is 50p. This was reduced from 5p / £1 and allows punters to place big permutations without risking large amounts.
There is the option of backing the un-named favourite in any of the six races. When this option is selected, your selection will be the Starting Price (SP) Favourite. If there is a joint-favourite, the selected horse will be the one which has the lowest racecard number.
The Placepot dividend is the amount in the prize pool which is shared by winners and is to a £1 stake. For example, in 2019 at the Cheltenham Festival, the prize pool was £958,481,10 and there were 10.5 winning units which meant the dividend was £91,283.10. One lucky punter placed a £2 bet on a winning line and so collected a whopping £182,567.80! If the winner had placed a £0.10 bet, they would have received 10% of the dividend.
Placepot winnings are calculated by dividing the total stakes in the prize pool by the number of winning tickets after the bookies deductions have been made. The deductions are a set percentage of the pool and vary between the Tote betting products. An example of William Hill Tote deductions can be found below.
