Wincanton Tips

Wincanton Racecourse is located in the scenic countryside of Somerset and around 1km north of Wincanton town which has a population of just 6,000.

The racecourse is owned by The Jockey Club which also runs fourteen other courses across the UK.

Trainer, Paul Nicholls, has a yard nearby and has dominated races at the course over the years with his young horses regularly running at Wincanton.

Wincanton Racecourse

Wincanton Racecourse is a good test of a chaser with the steeplechase fences being large. There are three fences relatively close together towards the end of the home-straight which often makes for exciting and dramatic races.

The track is right-handed, sharp and flat. It is oval-shaped and two miles long with tight turns that tends to suit handy horses.

Wincanton Feature Races

Although a rather small and not so well known course, Wincanton hosts some notable National Hunt races throughout the year.

The Kingwell Hurdle, which is a Grade 2 race that takes place in February, is the main event at the course. It is open to horses aged four and over and run over a distance of two miles. It serves as an important trial for the Champion Hurdle which takes place on the opening day of the Cheltenham Festival March.

The Badger Beers Silver Trophy is another popular race that takes place in November and has been dominated by Paul Nicholls over the years with the trainer having had no less than ten winners from 1999 to 2019.
