The 2024 Summer Olympics will be held in Paris, France, from July 26th to August 11th. Athletes from around the world will compete in over 400 different sporting events, with the Men’s 100m being one of the highlights of the Games.
With American sprinter Noah Lyles now emerging as one of the favourites for gold, punters have a decision to make as to who they will back to win gold.
We’ll be sharing our Olympics 100m predictions, comparing Lyles with Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson and taking a look at the factors that may determine the winner of the event.
As it stands, there are two main contenders for the 100m men’s gold medal at the 2024 Olympics. The USA’s Noah Lyles and Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson seem to be battling it out as the bookies favourites with little in the price between the two.
Noah Lyles, previously regarded as a strong contender, has now climbed to a close 2nd-favourite for the gold medal in the men’s 100m at the 2024 Olympics in Paris. The odds on Lyles have shortened over recent weeks and now the American is priced at just 6/4 to claim the gold medal, just shy of the 5/4 offered on Jamaican Kishane Thompson.
Lyles’ recent performances have boosted his position as one of the top contenders in the event. At the 2023 World Championships, he clinched the gold medal with an impressive time of 9.83 seconds. Lyles continued to impress following the World Championships by registering a 9.81-second run in London in June. Despite this, his personal best still falls short of Thompson’s top times.
Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson, the favourite in the bookies odds, is Lyles main threat. Thompson’s form remains impressive, with impressive performances that put him in a strong position to claim the gold medal.
Thompson has displayed his potential with a 9.77 second run in the final round of the Jamaican Olympic trials and a 9.82 seconds in the opening round. These times not only highlight his capability but also place him ahead of Lyles in terms of raw speed.
The men’s Olympic 100-metre has been a rivalry between the United States and Jamaica over the recent Summer Olympic Games with sprinters from these two nations have claimed the gold medal five times in the last six events. Usain Bolt’s reign of supremacy set a high benchmark, but the current rivalry between Lyles and Thompson is just as exciting for fans to watch.
Lyles aims to become the first American to win gold in the 100 metres since Justin Gatlin in 2004. There is a lot of pressure on Lyles, not only due to the legacy of his predecessors but also because of Thompson’s ability. To claim the gold medal this year, Lyles may need to improve on what is already an impressive career and run a personal best in Paris.
Although it would be foolish to write off other runners, it seems to be a two-horse race for the gold medal between Thompson and Lyles. There’s not much separating the two in terms of ability which is reflected in the extremely close odds offered by the bookies.
For us, we’ll be backing Kishane Thompson to pip Lyle to the line in the final on August 4th. The Jamaican has speed on his side, albeit by a narrow margin, and seems to be the better bet of the two if you’re forced to choose one.
