The 2022 World Cup gets underway on the 21st of November and will run for four weeks with the final being held on the 18th of December.

It’s the first time in history that the tournament will be held during the British wintertime and many will be looking forward to a month of football matches featuring the best players in the world in Qatar.

If you’re thinking of having a bet on the World Cup, whether it be on matches in the group stages, the final or ante-post bets on the top goal scorer or player of the tournament, we have you covered.

WhichBookie’s football expert Liam Johnson provides football tips throughout the season and will of course be covering matches taking place at the 2022 World Cup.

World Cup Tips

Liam will be providing tips for every match taking place at the 2022 World Cup. This includes all 48 group stage matches as well as the 16 matches that take place throughout the knockout stages.

Many of the group stage betting tips and previews will be published in the weeks and days leading up to the World Cup and betting tips for the knockout stage games will be live once the teams featuring are confirmed.

As well as tips for each World Cup match, you’ll also be able to read previews for the games along with team news, expected line-ups and more.

World Cup Ante Post Tips

There are several ante-post betting markets available for Qatar 2022 with some of the most popular being:

You’ll find betting tips for several of the above markets in the months leading up to the World Cup with tips listed on this page.

World Cup Winner Tips

With the 2022 World Cup fast approaching, it’s time to start looking at the potential tournament winner. I’ll be focussing on the favourites to lift the trophy and also some of the outsiders who I believe have a strong chance of progressing in the competition.

We’ll be providing World Cup tips for every match played throughout the competition so be sure to check back when the tournament gets underway.

Brazil – 9/2

Brazil have won the World Cup more than any other nation, lifting the trophy a total of five times. However, their last victory came 20 years ago and they have failed to progress past the quarter-finals in every tournament since.

However, it’s hard to ignore the sheer quality in Brazil’s squad and it’s not difficult to see why the bookies have them as the pre-tournament favourites.

Neymar, Vinicius Junior, Alisson, Antony, Gabriel Jesus, Coutinho, Firmino, Casemiro and Richarlison are just a few of the players that are at their disposal and if in form, they should reach the later stages of the tournament without many issues.

The favourites have been drawn into Group G along with Serbia, Switzerland and Cameroon. This certainly isn’t the easiest of the groups but I do expect Brazil to finish top with maximum points. If they do, they would head into the knockout stages with a tie against the runner-up of Group H which features Portugal, Uruguay, Korea Republic and Ghana. Should they progress, they’d then likely face either Spain or Croatia in the quarter-finals followed by a semi-final clash against the likes of Argentina, Denmark or the Netherlands. Should the group stages pan out as I would expect, they wouldn’t face the likes of France, England, Germany or Belgium until the final, should they make it that far, which would be a huge bonus for them.

France –  6/1

France have won the World Cup in two of their last six attempts along with finishing runners-up in 2006. They’re the defending champions after beating Croatia 4-2 in the final of Russia 2018 and with the likes of Benzema, Mbappe, Pogba, Griezmann, N’Golo Kante and Dembele all available, they should be one of the more feared teams in the competition.

The defending champions are in Group D along with Denmark, Tunisia and Australia. Denmark are a very solid team who have the potential to finish top of the group and the winner will likely be decided by the outcome of the head-to-head between the two sides on Saturday 26th November.

Should France top the group, they’d play the runner-up of Group C which features Argentina, Poland, Mexico and Saudi Arabia. I expect either Poland or Mexico to finish second behind Argentina and both of those should prove to be winnable games for France.

Things could get interesting should they meet England in the quarter-finals and they may have to progress past the likes of Belgium, Germany or Portugal in the semis before reaching the final.

Argentina – 7/1

Argentina are the bookies third favourite to list the World Cup this year but they haven’t had the best of runs in the competition in recent years. Other than reaching the final in 2014 when they were beaten 1-0 by Germany, they have failed to progress past the quarters in all attempts since 1990.

All eyes will be on Lionel Messi throughout Argentina’s stint in this year’s tournament as the legend prepares for his final World Cup. He’ll need to be on top form to help his country win the competition for the first time since 1986 but they’re certainly have a chance of doing so.

England – 7/1

Following reaching the semi-finals of Russia 2018 and the final of Euro 2020, there are high hopes for England in the 2022 World Cup. However, Gareth Southgate’s side have failed to produce any kind of consistent form since losing on penalties to Italy in the final last summer and failed to win any of their six Nations League matches, scoring 4 goals and conceding 10.

There has been increasing pressure on manager Gareth Southgate and although you could argue that he opted to rotate his squad for the Nations League matches in a bid to give some of his players a chance to prove themselves, their performances of late do not fill you with any confidence heading into the World Cup which is just weeks away.

I do expect a better show from England once the World Cup gets underway however and they should progress from their group with relative ease. Wales, USA and Iran should not pose too much of a threat and should Netherlands finish top of group A, England would meet either Ecuador, Senegal or Qatar.

Victory in the round of 16 would see Southgate’s side just three games away from lifting their first World Cup since 1966 but those matches are likely to be against France in the quarter finals and other top teams thereafter.

Other Contenders

If there’s one thing that the history of this competition has taught us, it’s that the World Cup won’t be won by an outsider.

There have been 21 World Cups to date which have been won by just 8 teams.

Brazil (5), Germany (4), Italy (4), France (2), Argentina (2), Uruguay (2), Spain (1), England (1).

However, along with the four favourites detailed above, there are several other teams in contention this year.

Spain certainly have enough quality in their side to do well this year and Germany will likely put in a better performance than they did at Euro 2020.

Many have been expecting Belgium to win a tournament for several years now and they are ranked #2 in the world by FIFA. Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku would all be welcome in most other national teams and they finished third at Russia 2018. If they click, this could be their year and at odds of 14/1, they’re a good value bet in my opinion.

Outsider Pick

My outsider pick is Netherlands who could fly throughout this tournament. They’ve improved hugely over the past year and are unbeaten since June 2021. They are certainly capable in front of goal and if things go to plan, they could have one of the easier routes to the quarter finals.

They shouldn’t have any trouble topping Group A ahead of Ecuador, Senegal and Qatar which would line them up in the Round of 16 against the runner-up of Group B. Should England finish top of that group, Netherlands would likely face either Wales or USA and whichever one makes it, Netherlands would surely head into the game as favourites.

I’d also back them to come out on top in a potential quarter-final clash against Argentina and so at odds of 14/1 to win, or 13/2 to at least reach the final, looks like a great bet to me. They will likely face a very tough semi-final fixture should they make it to the penultimate round which could be against Brazil, Spain or Croatia but I’d be willing to take a punt on them making it through to the final game if they’re in full flow.

World Cup Winner / To Reach The Final

There isn’t one team that stands out from the crowd to me this year. England are far too short based on current form and I’m reluctant to back Brazil given their past finishes in the tournament. France would be my pick from the favourites but similar to England, they had a horrid Nations League campaign, picking up just one win from six. However, I do think that we’ll see more of what we’re used to from France throughout the World Cup and so, along with tipping Netherlands as an outsider, I’m taking a chance on France & Netherlands to meet in the final at best odds of 33/1 with BetVictor.

World Cup Accumulators

World Cup Betting Advice

It’s easy to take the advice of tipsters when betting on the World Cup but it may also be a good idea to do some research yourself and apply the best betting strategies so that you give yourself the best chance of ending the tournament with a profit.

World Cup Betting Offers

The World Cup is one of the biggest sporting events to take place and because of that, it’s no surprise that a huge amount of money is bet on it. Bookmakers want your business during this time and one way they attract both new and existing customers is with the betting offers that they make available.

Betting offers can add to the value of your bets throughout the tournament and significantly increase your chances of making a profit. Therefore, it’s often a good idea to take the bookies up on these offers and claim as many of the good ones as possible. That’s why we recommend opening accounts with several different bookies prior to the tournament starting so that you are ready to claim the offers when they become available.

You’ll find a list of betting sites on our Best Bookmakers For The World Cup page.

Some betting offers you can expect to be available throughout the 2022 World Cup include:

World Cup Stats

Statistics are a great way to determine the best bets to place on any sporting event or competition. This year’s tournament will be the 22nd World Cup to be played and so there is a lot of data available.

Some teams have poor records at the World Cup whereas others seem to do better than they would in other tournaments.

The same goes for players who may play better or worse for their national team than they do at club level.

All of these statistics are available for free online and it’s a good idea to spend a bit of time going through the data to confirm or overturn the bets you are considering placing.

Watch All The Games

One of the best pieces of advice we can give, whether you are betting on live games or placing pre-match bets, is to watch as many of the games throughout the tournament that you can. This is especially useful for when betting on teams or players throughout the knockout stages as you will have a better understanding of how they have performed in the tournament up to that point.

All of the games will be broadcast live on television and you can also watch some matches via your betting account.

You’ll find a list of available World Cup matches that can be streamed via Bet365 on our football live streaming page.

England Odds To Win The World Cup

England were as low as 5/1 to win the 2022 World Cup back in April of this year, prior to their Nations League group matches taking place. However, their poor performances throughout the competition, along with some defensive worries due to injuries, have caused their odds to plummet to a best price of 9/1 with online bookmaker SportNation. They’re now the same odds as Spain to win the tournament with Argentina, France and Brazil all favoured ahead of Southgate’s side.

We’ll be covering England to reach various stages of the tournament further down this article but for now, we’ll focus on them ending 56 years of hurt and lifting the trophy in Qatar on 18 December.

Regardless of whether England top their group, they’re going to have to beat a minimum of 2-3 top teams in order to win the tournament and so it’s whether or not you can see them getting the better of the likes of Brazil, France, Argentina and others.

France, like England, haven’t had the best preparation for Qatar, having had a poor Nations League campaign, winning just one of their six matches.

Argentina would be a tough match for England but I would be somewhat confident of them being able to progress past Lionel Scaloni’s side should they show some of the form we saw last year.

Brazil are the bookies favourites to lift the trophy this year which isn’t surprising given the talent in their squad. However, although they have won the World Cup more than any other Nation (5 times), they have failed to progress past the quarter-final stage in their last four attempts.

Can England win the World Cup? Yes.

Will England win the World Cup? Unlikely.

As much as I’d love to see them finally lift a trophy, form is a big factor heading into any major competition and they just haven’t shown enough of it in recent months to back them with any confidence.

Verdict: Bet not recommended at 9/1

Group Betting

With the qualifying stages now complete, the 2022 World Cup draw has been made and teams now know who they will face in the group stages of the tournament.

Although betting on the winner of the World Cup is by far the most popular market, you may also wish to take a look at betting on World Cup groups.

We’ve put together this World Cup group betting guide which will show you which teams will face each other along with World Cup group odds and who we think will make it through to the knockout stages of the tournament.

Betting On Group A

Every country would have liked to be drawn into Group A as the hosts Qatar were guaranteed a place in this group instead of others in Pot 1 such as Brazil, Belgium, France, Argentina, England, Spain and Portugal.

It is the Netherlands who will perhaps benefit from this draw the most as they were drawn from pot 2 along with Senegal and Ecuador to join Qatar in Group A.

Although the hosts generally tend to do well in World Cup tournaments, it’s difficult to see Qatar making it out of this group.

It’s likely going to be between the Netherlands and Senegal to battle it out for the top two places and for me, it’s the Dutch who will top the table.

Betting On Group B

England were the team to be drawn from pot 1 into Group B and are joined by the USA, Iran and Wales.

England are, as you would expect, the favourites to top the group and are priced at 1/3 to do so. Southgate’s side have been extremely reliable recent major tournaments, finishing third in the 2018 World Cup and making it through to the final game of Euro 2020 only to lose on penalties to Italy. This isn’t the easiest group for them as the USA could be a threat and there’s nothing more Wales would like than to beat the Three Lions at the World Cup.

However, England should prevail by finishing top but as the final group has yet to be determined, it’s hard to predict who will finish second.

I’d probably rule Iran out and would give second place to either the USA or Wales. Gareth Bale steps up to a different level when playing for his country and so if fit and in form, he could be the edge Wales need to make it through to the knockout stages.

Argentina will be hoping to go one better than the Round of 16 which they achieved at the 2018 World Cup when they were beaten 4-3 by the hosts France.

They’re been drawn in Group C along with Poland, Mexico and Saudi Arabia and are the odds-on favourites to finish top.

Saudi Arabia will likely struggle in this tricky group and so it’s between Poland and Mexico for second place.

It’s a tough one to call but I have a feeling Mexico may be able to sneak through.

They too made it through to the Round of 16 at France ‘18 and were knocked out in a 2-0 defeat to Brazil.

Group E of the World Cup has been labelled the ‘Group of Death’ and is considered to be the most competitive of the eight groups.

However, the competitiveness is mainly between the two favourites – Spain and Germany, with the other sides having to step up if they are to claim a top two finish.

It’s difficult to pick a winner from the two but I’d have to side ever so slightly with Spain who have a lot of young talent in their squad and if they click at this years’ tournament, they could be real contenders for the cup.

Japan may put up a fight in this group but their lack of firepower may ultimately result in them finishing outside of the top two.

Costa Rica will join those three in Group E and are unlikely to trouble two of the tournaments favourites.

Group F features top seed and FIFA’s number 1 ranked team Belgium along with Croatia, Morocco and Canada.

Croatia will challenge for the top spot in this group but if Belgium are on top form, they should progress as the group winners ahead of them.

This is the first time Canada have qualified for the World Cup since 1986 and much of that is thanks to their English manager John Herdman who has transformed the side.

With motivation and enthusiasm being at a high level, I think Canada will be able to finish third ahead of Morocco but they’d have to cause a huge upset to progress to the knockouts.

Betting On Group G

Five-time winners of the World Cup Brazil are joined in Group G by Switzerland, Serbia and Cameroon.

As you’d expect, Brazil are the odds-on favourites to progress as the group winners but I think it’ll be close for second place.

Switzerland managed to put three past France in the Round of 16 at Euro 2020 and progress through to the quarter-finals on penalties. They then held Spain to a 1-1 draw only to be eliminated on spot kicks at that stage. They’ve proven themselves to be a very good side who can give the best countries a game and if they’re in the same form as last summer, they’ll have a great chance of making it out of their group at the World Cup.

However, Serbia shouldn’t be underestimated and they will be mildly confident of progressing themselves.

Based on Switzerland’s performances at the Euro’s, I’ll have to hand second place to them as a betting prediction.

Betting On Group H

Group H consists of Portugal, Uruguay, South Korea and Ghana which in my opinion, is one of the most competitive groups of the tournament.

Portugal are the bookies’ favourites but I think odds of 8/13 are just too short. They had to take the playoff route to qualify for this year’s World Cup and I’m not fully convinced with them at the moment.

However, Cristiano Ronaldo will be looking to make sure that his side progress as this could be his last World Cup with being just two months off 38 when the tournament concludes. The Manchester United star will always pose a threat when on the pitch but one man can’t win a game and all three of the other teams in this group do have the ability to cause teams problems.

I’m going out on a limb here with my predictions in this group and backing Portugal to be eliminated at the first hurdle.

Although South Korea have failed to make it past the group stage since 2010, they have qualified for every World Cup since 1982. Tottenham’s Son Heung-min is their stand-out player who is a player worthy of tournaments such as this one.

World Cup Winning Group

If you browse the World Cup betting markets on any of the top UK bookie sites, you may come across a market named ‘World Cup 2022 Winning Group’.

This is a relatively popular and interesting market that can often be a better choice than betting on a country to win the tournament.

With the Winning Group market, you are betting on the group that contains the winning country.

A common strategy is to first determine a list of countries that you believe have a fair chance of winning the World Cup.

Then, make a note of which groups they are in.

If there are groups containing more than one contender, it could be a good option to bet on that group to feature the team that will win the tournament.

As you can see from the odds below, Group E is priced the shortest as this group features two of the favourites – Spain and Germany.

World Cup Winning Group Prediction

Other than Group E that features Spain & Germany, I don’t see another group that contains two potential winners. Therefore, if I was to have a bet on this market, it would be on Group E at odds of 7/2.

Prediction: Group E

To Win All Group Games Prediction

As the odds suggest, England have a great chance of finishing their group matches with maximum points.

Southgate’s side have been extremely reliable over recent years and certainly don’t lose many games.

Although the other teams in their group do pose a threat, they will head into every game as favourites and will be expected to win all three.

Brazil and the Netherlands also look like reasonable bets to place.

Brazil should have the quality to see off Serbia, Switzerland and Cameroon and the Netherlands are in possibly the weakest group with hosts Qatar, Ecuador and Senegal.

Prediction: England @ 7/4 & Netherlands @ 9/4
