Megabet is an independent bookmaker based in the north-east of England who currently operate 42 betting shops. The business has struggled in recent years and the limit placed on maximum stakes on Fixed Odds Betting Terminals in 2019 (FOBT’s) had a devastating effect. The Company was acquired by Bet 21 Ltd in March 2019. In July, just four months later Megabet entered into a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) with its creditors and closed 45 betting shops, more than half of its retail estate.
Megabet bookmakers was previously known as Stan James bookmakers however the change of name to Megabet took place in November 2016 after Stan James agreed to sell their online betting site to Unibet. Stan James were one of the pioneers of internet betting in the UK having previously operated a very successful telephone betting operation. The shop estate was always relatively small in comparison to the telephone and internet operations but following the acquisition of 27 Pagebet shops in 2010 from the Administrator much more emphasis was placed on growing the Stan James betting shop estate and the chain had over 90 shops at the end of 2018.
The existing Megabet betting shops are focused primarily in the north-east of England and around the areas in Oxfordshire and Berkshire where the first Stan James shop was opened in Wantage in 1973.
The sale of the Stan James online operation completed in February 2018 and shortly afterwards the decision was taken to move all Stan James accounts to the Unibet brand.
