England vs Republic of Ireland Prediction, Betting Tips & Preview
The upcoming UEFA Nations League clash between England and the Republic of Ireland at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, 17th November, at 17:00 promises to be…
English Premier League Club Manchester City have emerged as odds-on favourites to sign La Liga superstar Lionel Messi after it was announced he wants to leave the club.
On Tuesday 25th August, Barcelona forward Lionel Messi, who also plays for Argentina, one of the bookies outright winner tips for the World Cup, told the club that he wishes to leave the club in the summer.
Messi has been with the 26-time La Liga champions for 19 years and joined the club in 2001 after spending 6 years as a youth at Newell’s Old Boys. However, after the club suffered a humiliating 8-2 defeat at the hands of Champions League winners Bayern Munich earlier this month and a number of reports of his unhappiness at the club, the 33 year old reportedly sent a fax to the hierarchy requesting that his contract be terminated.
There are suggestions that Messi has a clause in his contract in which he could request to leave the club should he wish to do so, so long as his request was made by June. In any normal season, La Liga and the Champions League would have been wrapped up by this date but since fixtures were delayed this season, it meant that the season wasn’t concluded until late August. It is reported that Messi feels the clause date should be extended due to the season finishing late and if it is approved, he will be free to join another club.
Although Barcelona will likely fight the case, bookies have already started taking bets on Messi’s next club.
But where would he go?
Odds were correct at the time of publishing (13:30 Wednesday 26th August 2020) but are subject to change.
1.To Stay At Barcelona
It is possible that the clause in Messi’s contract won’t be honoured and he remain as a Barcelona player. Bookies are currently offering odds of around even for this bet.
To Stay At Barcelona: 4/7 (SkyBet)
2. Manchester City
If there is one club which would suit Messi’s style of play, it is Manchester City and the 2019 champions are the bookies favourite should Messi be allowed to move clubs.
Bookies are currently offering odds as low as 8/13 for a move to City but the best odds are 5/4 with SkyBet.
To Move To Manchester City: 5/4 (SkyBet)
3. Inter Milan
Inter Milan have not hidden the fact that they have been interested in signing Messi for the last 10 years or so.
Again the odds range quite a bit between bookmakers with Betfred offering just 6/1 odds but Betvictor offering 14/1.
To Move To Inter Milan: 28/1 (SkyBet)
4. Paris Saint-Germain (PSG)
PSG made it to the Champions League final this season and won the treble in Ligue 1 and the bookies have the French side as third-favourites to sign the Argentinian. Ex-Barca teammate Neymar is currently at PSG and will no doubt have some influence on whether or not Messi chooses this option should he leave the club.
To Move To PSG: 28/1 (SkyBet)
5. Manchester United
The odds start jumping up a bit with the remaining options and it is another Manchester club which is next in line.
Bookies have Messi to opt for Manchester United at odds ranging from 8/1 to 22/1 with SkyBet currently offering the best odds by far.
To Move To Manchester United: 33/1 (Betvictor)
Other Possible Clubs
When such a prolific player is potentially available, it’s no surprise that they will be linked to a number of clubs based on the vast interest.
As well as the front-runners listed above, here are a few more possibilities based on the bookies odds.
