Spurs welcome Manchester United to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday 16 February, with Ange Postecoglou’s men looking to complete a Premier League double over the Red Devils for the first time in 36 years.
You have to go all the way back to the 1989/1990 campaign to find the last season that Spurs beat United both home and away in the league. It shows how United have dominated the north London side over the decades. But in recent meetings, Postecoglou’s team have enjoyed more success.
By looking at SportsBoom’s football odds Tottenham is clear favourite going into Sunday’s clash, having gone unbeaten in their last five meetings against United.
In that run, Spurs have recorded three wins, including a thrilling 4-3 victory in the Carabao Cup on December 19.
With Ruben Amorim’s side losing more than half of their matches played, Spurs will be confident of sealing all three points.
Tottenham vs Manchester United Match Preview
Tottenham
Tottenham have struggled in the Premier League this season with injuries to key players their biggest downfall. Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and their first-choice centre-back pairing of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have all spent lengthy spells on the treatment table.
But while Tottenham have been unfortunate with injuries plaguing the squad, Postecoglou is still under intense pressure following some of his tactics, with the Australian insisting on playing a high line – much to the displeasure of many Spurs supporters.
It hasn’t only been all bad at Tottenham though. While the lows have been incredibly low, the highs (not the high line) have been extraordinarily high. The Lilywhites annihilated Champions League side Aston Villa at 4-1 home and thrashed Manchester United and Manchester City in their backyard, winning 3-0 and 4-0 respectively.
Manchester United
It’s been a nightmare for Manchester United fans this season. Having witnessed Erik ten Hag being heavily backed in the summer transfer window, there were great expectations.
Fast forward to the present day and United is on their third manager, languishing in the bottom half of the table with more losses than they have won, while they’ve conceded more goals than they’ve scored.
Under Amorim, there have been some signs of improvement. But it’s all up and down – just when you think they’re making progress, they end up disappointing and lose badly to opponents they really should be putting away.
Many have been quick to label this a ‘free-hit season’ with the objectives for the campaign thrown out the window, but this is still Manchester United, and results have got to improve. Simple as that.
Prediction: Tottenham to Win
With both teams struggling in the bottom half of the table, neither side will want to lose, and that factor could make for an exciting game of attacking football. That said, we’re confident in both sides getting on the scoresheet, but in terms of a result, we fancy Tottenham to do enough to secure the win and bag a vital three points.
