Liverpool and Newcastle battle it out for the first major domestic trophy of the season on Sunday afternoon at Wembley Stadium in the final of the Carabao Cup. 2024 winners Liverpool aim to defend their crown whilst Newcastle United look to put an end to their long silverware drought which spans 70 years from when they won the FA Cup in 1955.
Arne Slot’s side head into the match as clear favourites and have an excellent record against Newcastle. However, on their day, the Magpies have proven they can beat the best teams in the world, and if Eddie Howe’s side are at their best, they’ll be sure to make life difficult for Liverpool on Sunday.
We’ll be sharing our Carabao Cup final predictions below along with team news, expected lineups, and the latest Liverpool vs Newcastle odds.
Jurgen Klopp’s departure has left Arne Slot with big shoes to fill, and this final represents his first opportunity to secure silverware as Liverpool manager. However, the Liverpool manager does have some defensive concerns:
Trent Alexander-Arnold is a doubt after sustaining a knock in Liverpool’s recent Champions League exit against PSG.
Ibrahima Konaté was substituted in that match, but Slot has suggested it was due to fatigue rather than an injury concern.
Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez are expected to miss out, meaning Jarell Quansah could start at right-back.
Tyler Morton remains unavailable through injury.
Eddie Howe’s side has shown remarkable resilience in reaching back-to-back Carabao Cup finals, but injuries and suspensions have dealt them a significant blow:
Anthony Gordon is suspended after receiving a red card against Brighton in the FA Cup.
Lewis Hall’s ankle injury has ruled him out for the remainder of the season.
Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles will also miss out, further limiting Newcastle’s defensive options.
Liverpool have mostly dominated past encounters with Newcastle, winning 7 of their last 8 meetings.
The two sides last met in the Premier League earlier this season, with Liverpool securing a 2-0 win at Anfield.
Liverpool enter this final as the stronger side, with a squad rich in experience and depth. While Newcastle’s hunger to secure their first domestic trophy since 1955 cannot be underestimated, Liverpool’s quality and big-game mentality should prove decisive. We expect a closely contested match but ultimately see Liverpool lifting the Carabao Cup trophy at Wembley.
Liverpool’s young squad defied the odds to win the Carabao Cup last season despite an injury crisis, and they enter this final as clear favourites. Under Arne Slot, they have continued to show their quality in both attack and defence.
Newcastle, on the other hand, will take confidence from their impressive semi-final win over Arsenal. However, with key absentees and the weight of history against them, overcoming Liverpool at Wembley will be a tough task.
Match Prediction: Liverpool to win. Bet with bet365.
Liverpool and Newcastle have historically produced entertaining matches when they’ve met and that hasn’t changed much in recent years. 2024 encounters between these two sides resulted in 3-3 & 4-2 scorelines and there are several other examples of high-scoring games between these two rivals. That said, none of the last four Carabao Cup Finals have produced more than two goals, and three of the last four have ended with just 1 or fewer goals scored in 90 minutes. There’s a lot at stake for both of these sides, but we’re banking on an entertaining game, with both Liverpool and Newcastle pushing for a goal and ultimately finding the net each within normal time.
Carabao Cup Final Correct Score Prediction: Liverpool 2-1 Newcastle
Correct Score Prediction: 2-1 to Liverpool. Bet with bet365.
As mentioned above, Carabao Cup Finals of recent years have proven to be somewhat short of goals. However, with the attacking quality in both sides, including the likes of Mo Salah and Alexander Isak, it’s hard to envision a game without goals. Especially with both sides having key players unavailable at the back.
Liverpool vs Newcastle Over/Under Prediction: Over 2.5 goals.
Over/Under Prediction: Over 2.5 Goals. Bet with bet365.

Both sides will be eager to pick up the first domestic silverware of the season. Liverpool will be keen to put their mid-week UEFA Champions League exit behind them, whilst Newcastle aim to have another stab at adding to their trophy cabinet for the first time since 1995 following falling short in defeat to Manchester United in the final two seasons ago.
You wouldn’t be crazy to back Newcastle to lift the EFL Cup, especially not at odds of 5/1 or slightly shorter, but it’s not hard to see why Liverpool are the clear favourites and we believe Arne Slot’s side will successfully defend their title in the competition which would compliment a very probable league title.
